NY Daily News: Leave NYC’s subway safety comms alone

Earlier this year, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission regarding a little-noticed proceeding related to the 4.9 GHz spectrum band. This may seem arcane and complicated, but it is really very simple. The MTA told the FCC it needs access to this spectrum to keep the subway system safe. Unfortunately, AT&T and its arrayed allies are trying to take it away.

The 4.9 GHz band was designated by the FCC for public safety use. Its licenses belong to state and local entities like the MTA. Many state and local authorities use this spectrum alongside others to ensure every nook and cranny of a city like New York has adequate coverage for public safety communications. Without spectrum like the 4.9 GHz band, there would be holes and safety could be compromised….
